UPR-Bayamon rallies by UPR-Mayaguez 2-1 in PacWest Little World Series

St. GEORGE, UT - Puerto Rico Bayamon scratched out a tie-breaking run in the bottom of the seventh on Thursday to slip by Puerto Rico Mayaguez 2-1 in Game 4 of the Pacific West Conference Little World Series.

The four-day Division II baseball tournament is being hosted by Dixie State College in St. George, UT. The Vaqueros' victory moves UPR-Bayamon into a battle with Puerto Rico Rio Piedras in the losers' bracket of the tournament on Friday, May 8, at 3 p.m.

Mayaguez will face the loser of Rio Piedras and Bayamon on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the consolation game.

Mayaguez scored first in the top of the fourth when Richard Ramirez doubled and eventually scored on an RBI single by Francisco Villavicenci.

But Bayamon rallied to tie the game in the home sixth when Joseph Negron walked, moved to second on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt, and then wound up at third base on a sacrifice bunt by Johnathan Melendez. He then scored on an RBI double by Marcos Perez.

UPR-Bayamon took the lead for good when Rodrigo Matta doubled down the leftfield line and scored on Negron's base hit. Negron finished the game going 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Mayaguez was led by David Negron, who went 2 for 5, and Jose Huertas, who was 2 for 3. Ramirez finished the game 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Jesus Concepcion earned the victory in relief, tossing three complete innings of one-hit ball.
