GCU's Engen Nurumbi earns Player of the Week honor

Engen Nurumbi earns weekly PacWest award

QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Grand Canyon senior center Engen Nurumbi (Kinshasa, Congo) led the Antelopes to a 2-0 mark to claim the Pacific West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week award.

The honor was announced on Monday, Feb. 2, by the PacWest Media Office in Queen Creek, AZ, for games played from Jan. 26-Feb. 1.

Nurumbi averaged 25.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for Grand Canyon. He led the league in scoring for the week while ranking second in rebounding.

Nurumbi also shot 67.9% from the floor, making 19 for 28 field goal attempts to rank fourth in the PacWest for the week.

 

PacWest Men's Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll

Trenson Akana - BYU-Hawaii (Sr., G, 5-10, 170, Kaunakaka‘i, HI/Moloka‘i)...averaged 14.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Seasiders...ranked 10th in scoring average for the week in the PacWest...shot 54.5% from three-point land (6 for 11)...averaged 3.00 three-pointers made per game.

Lucas Alves (photo) - BYU-Hawaii (Jr., F/C, 6-9, 230, Casa Branca, Brazil)...averaged 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Seasiders...ranked sixth in scoring average and fourth in rebounding for the week in the PacWest...shot 60.7% from the floor (9th in the PacWest)...made 17 of 28 field goal attempts...averaged 3.50 assists and 2.00 steals per game for the week...ranked eighth in assists and tied for seventh in steal average.

Dan Bergeron (photo) - NDNU (Sr., F, 6-7, 210, San Jose, CA/Fremont)...averaged 19.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in a pair of tough losses at Dixie State last week...ranked seventh in the PacWest in scoring for the week and tied for sixth in rebounding for the week.

Virgil Buensuceso - BYU-Hawaii (Jr., G, 5-9, 170, Eagle Rock, CA/Eagle Rock)...averaged 12.5 points, 2.00 steals and 10.00 assists per game in a 2-0 week for the Seasiders...led the PacWest in assist average...hit 9 of 10 free throw attempts (90.0%)...made 4 of 7 three-point shots (57.1%)...shot 60.0% from the floor (6 for 10).

David Cuen - Grand Canyon (Jr., F, 6-5, 210, Somerton, AZ/Cibola)...led the Antelopes to a 2-0 week by averaging 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game...ranked fourth in scoring average for the week in the PacWest...ranked fifth in rebounding.

Jay DeMaestri - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., F, 6-6, 240, Mill Valley, CA/Tam)...led the Vulcans to a 1-1 week by averaging 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest...tied for fourth in the league in scoring for the week...tied for second in rebounds per game...averaged 3.50 three-pointers made per game...tied for fourth in steals per game (2.50) for the week.

Mike Helton - Hawai‘i Pacific (Jr., F, 6-6, 185, El Paso, TX/Montwood)...scored 22 points in HPU's lone game of the week...shot 60% from three-point land (3 for 5).

Brandon McGruder - Grand Canyon (Jr., G, 6-2, 185, Omaha, NE/Bryan)...led the PacWest in shooting for the week, making 80% of his field goal attempts (8 for 10)...was a perfect 7 for 7 from the line...shot 71.4% from beyond the arc (5 for 7)...ranked second in three-point shooting for the week in the PacWest...averaged 2.50 three-pointers made per game.

Ryan Sanchez - Dixie State (Sr., G, 6-4, 185, Ogden, UT/Fremont)...led Dixie State to a 3-0 week along with a pair of conference victories by averaging 13.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per outing...averaged 3.00 steals per contest to rank second in the league for the week...averaged 4.67 assists per game to rank fifth in the league for the week...was 9 for 9 from the foul line.

Mohamed Tangara (photo) - Chaminade (Sr., C, 6-8, 250, Bamako, Mali)...poured in 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a tough loss at BYU-Hawaii on Jan. 29...marked the lone game of the week for the Silverswords...shot 69.2% from the floor (9 for 13).
