BYU-Hawaii's Jet Chang lands PacWest award
BYU-Hawaii freshman Jet Chang lands weekly honor
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - BYU-Hawaii freshman guard
Tsung-Hsien Chang (Yilan, Taiwan) led the
Seasiders to a 3-0 mark to collect the Pacific West Conference
Men's Basketball Player of the Week award.
The honor was announced on Wednesday, March 4, by the PacWest Media Office in Queen Creek, AZ, for games played from Feb. 23-March 1.
Chang averaged 17.3 points per game by shooting 59.5% from the floor. He made 22 of 37 field goal attempts and 6 of 10 three-point shots (60%). He also averaged 2.00 three-pointers made per contest.
The three victories extended the Seasiders' winning streak to 20 straight games.
PacWest Men's Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll
Lucas Alves - BYU-Hawaii (Jr., F/C, 6-9, 230, Casa Branca, Brazil)...averaged 18.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in a 3-0 week for the Seasiders...ranked fifth in scoring average for the week in the PacWest.
Jacob Briggs (photo) - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., F, 6-4, 200,
Burbank, CA/Village Christian)...powered in 19 points
and collected eight boards in 25-point victory over HPU on Feb.
27...marked lone contest of the week for the Vulcans...shot 77.8%
from the floor (7 for 9)...was 5 for 5 from the line.
David Cuen - Grand Canyon (Jr., F, 6-5, 210, Somerton, AZ/Cibola)...registered 20 points and nine rebounds in tough loss vs. BYU-Hawaii on Feb. 23...marked lone game of the week for the Antelopes.
Jay DeMaestri - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., F, 6-6, 240, Mill Valley, CA/Tam)...scored 23 points to lead all point-getters in 101-76 victory over HPU on Feb. 27...connected on 6 of 14 three-point attempts (42.9%)...doled out five assists...pulled down nine rebounds and was 3 for 3 from the line.
Bowie Jeffs - Dixie State (Sr., G, 6-6, 185, Castle Dale, UT/Emery)...averaged 14.5 points per game in a sweep of NDNU last weekend...averaged 3.00 three-pointers made per game...hit 6 of 15 three-point attempts (40%)...was perfect from the line (7 for 7).
Bennie Murray - NDNU (Fr., G, 6-4, 160, Fairfield, CA/Will C. Wood)...averaged 19 points per contest in a pair of losses vs. Dixie State...was 5 for 9 from beyond the arc (55.6%)...ranked third in scoring for the week in the PacWest...was fourth in three-point shooting and fifth in three-pointers made per game (2.50).
Ryan Sanchez (photo left) - Dixie State (Sr., G, 6-4, 185, Ogden,
UT/Fremont)...solid all-around weekend at
NDNU...averaged 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.50 assists and 1.50
blocks per game...Dixie State swept the Argos in two contests.
Joel Smith (photo right) - Chaminade (Sr., G, 6-4, 210, Lompoc,
CA/Lompoc)...averaged 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds
per game during three contests...ranked seventh in scoring average
and third in rebounding for the week in the PacWest...doled out
5.33 assists per game and averaged 2.67 three-pointers made per
contest...ranked fourth in three-pointers made and third in assist
average.
Nathan Sims - BYU-Hawaii (Sr., G/F, 6-3, 200, Sky Valley, CA/Desert Hot Springs)...led BYU-Hawaii to a 3-0 week with a sweep of Chaminade and a road victory at Grand Canyon...averaged 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest...also averaged 2.33 steals per game.
Mohamed Tangara - Chaminade (Sr., C, 6-8, 250, Bamako, Mali)...averaged 14.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last week...shot 71.4% from the floor...ranked 11th in scoring, fifth in rebounding and fifth in shooting for the week in the PacWest.
