Grand Canyon claims 4th Pac West title of 2006-07; Storer, Goulding, Baker claim top awards

GOODYEAR, AZ - Grand Canyon University claimed the first Pacific West Conference Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday afternoon and its fourth title this season after capturing the league's links crown on Tuesday afternoon in Goodyear, Ariz.

The Antelopes fired a three-round total of 868 (291-290-287), finishing four over par for the tournament and seven strokes ahead of runner-up Notre Dame de Namur. The Argos posted an 875 (291-297-287) and were led by tournament champion Kory Storer who fired a nine-under-par 207.

The Pacific West Conference Men's Golf Championship was held at the Palm Valley Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday, April 2-3. Two rounds were played on Monday, while the final round was contested on Tuesday. The par 72 suburban Phoenix course covered 7015 yards.

Storer's victory earned him All-Pac West accolades and the Pacific West Conference Men's Golf Athlete of the Year. The Top 10 finishers are considered All-Conference, while the top freshman finisher is the Pacific West Freshman of the Year.

Storer set the Pac West 18-hole record with a stunning 66 on Monday morning, then he scored a 73 Monday afternoon setting the stage for his run. He posted the second-best conference championship round with a 68 on Tuesday.

Hawaii-Hilo rookie Logan Goulding finished fifth and won the Freshman of the Year accolade after producing a three-round total of 216 that left him even for the tournament. He carded a 76 in the first round, shaved four strokes off that score in round two, then matched Storer's 68 on Tuesday.

Along with Storer and Goulding, eight other players earned All-Pac West honors. Donald Zaruba III was the top finisher for Grand Canyon with a five-under par 211 (70-70-71) to take second overall, while teammate Blake Parks was sixth with a three-over-par 219 (70-77-72).

In addition to Storer, NDNU's Mike Prescott was sixth with a 214 (70-74-69) to claim All-Conference honors, while Goulding being the lone representative from any of the Hawaiian contingent earned the accolades by cracking into the Top 10.

Dixie State University of Utah registered the most All-Conference selections as the Rebels dominated the 7-10 slot after the final players returned to the clubhouse. Dixie was third overall with an 880 (294-292-294), while Hawai'i-Hilo finished fourth (312-306-291) with a 909.

BYU-Hawai'i took fifth after posting a 937 (301-321-315), Hawaii Pacific placed sixth with a 961 (306-328- 327) and Chaminade rounded out the field with a 1049 (354-366-329).

Dixie State saw two players share seventh place and two more share ninth to complete the All-Conference selections. Dusty Fielding (72-73-75=220) and Jordan Fowles (74-76-70=220) shared seventh place overall, while Brady Machin (78-70-74=222) and Aaron Yearsley (74-73-75=222) tied for ninth.

Grand Canyon head coach and athletic director Keith Baker was named the Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year for his team's title. As an A.D this season, Baker's Antelopes have won men's and women's conference titles in basketball to go along with the men's soccer co-championship with NDNU.
