Lakewood, CO - Grand Canyon University shot the second best round of the day with a seven-under-par 277 to finish in second place at the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Fox Hollow Golf Club today. Seniors Andrew Johnson, four-under-par 67, and Blake Parks, three-under-par 68 paced the veteran squad to their second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division II National Finals. The 'Lopes also finished second as the host institution for the 2006 West Region event. Cal State San Bernardino (286-271-284=841) entered the final round with a commanding lead and were 10 shots up on third place GCU and shot even par to hold on by three shots. The 'Lopes (282-285-277=844) had solid play from Senior Byron Parton (71) and Donald Zaruba (71) in the final round to go with the under par scoring of Johnson and Parks. Grand Canyon overtook second place Sonoma State on the final day to shoot eight under for the 54-hole event. Grand Canyon captured one of three "At-Large" berths to the NCAA Finals May 22-25 at The Meadows in Allendale, Michigan. Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus, who shot the days' best round at eight-under 276, earned the other two at-large spots from the West-Northwest Super Regional. In the individual medalist competition, Johnson (69-73-67=209, -4) and Parks (72-69-68=209, -4) were tied for third overall. Donald Zaruba (70-72-71=213, Even) was tied for tenth.
