Grand Canyon closes in on second straight PacWest Championship

QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Grand Canyon University inched closer to its second straight PacWest Men's Soccer Championship over the weekend by defeating both Hawai‘i Hilo and Hawai‘i Pacific in a pair of key conference home matches. Those victories coupled with NDNU's wins over the same two clubs left the Antelopes atop the PacWest with 18 points with 6-0-0 league mark.

Grand Canyon now has won five straight games and can clinch at least a share of the league crown with two conference victories. If the Antelopes win their next two league matches and Hawai‘i Pacific drops a contest, the PacWest title would reside in Phoenix for the second straight year. Last year GCU shared the trophy with NDNU, but the Antelopes are looking for an outright crown this season.

Grand Canyon will not play another PacWest conference game until October 27 when the Antelopes, Dixie State and NDNU all visit Hawai‘i to close out the regular season. By then, GCU could be celebrating a PacWest Championship since the four Hawaiian teams will battle each other starting Oct. 20. The three Mainland schools will wait to hear those results.

Last week GCU was led by junior Bosko Jovicevic (Belgrade, Serbia/Mechanical School of Belgrade - PHOTO) who had two goals, an assist, five points and a game-winner in Grand Canyon's two victories. Rookie Julien Roberts (San Fernando, Trinidad/Pleasantville Secondary School) also had a game-winner.

Junior middie Dorian Virrueta (Fremont, CA/American) scored two goals and added an assist for five points to help NDNU produce its 2-0 week. With the Argos down 2-0 just 20 minutes into their game vs. HPU, Virrueta scored NDNU's first goal off a throw-in to halve the Sea Warrior advantage. Senior Edgar Rivera (San Marcos, CA) then tied the game on a penalty kick before NDNU completed its comeback with a key 3-2 victory. Senior Edgar Flores (Los Angeles, CA) had a game-winner and an assist vs. UHH to finish the week with three points.

Hawai‘i Pacific senior midfielder Andre Whitt (Loveland, CO/Mountain View) and senior forward Akihide Adachi (Hyogo, Japan) shoved the Seasiders to a 2-0 lead over NDNU with goals in the first 20 minutes, but HPU suffered its third loss of the week as the Argos rallied.

Hawai‘i Hilo junior Dustin Daley (Brea, CA/Brea Olinda) and freshman Nyle Ortiz (Layton, UT/Layton) each scored a goal last week for the Vulcans, but UHH wound up 0-3 for the week.

Chaminade and BYU-Hawai‘i had off last week and will resume action against each other on Oct. 20 in a PacWest game.
