NDNU wins PacWest title; Awaits word from NCAA
LAIE, HI - Cristobal Montes broke a scoreless tie early the second half and Nathan Carlson and Oswaldo Hernandez added a pair of insurance goals as the Notre Dame de Namur men's soccer team blanked BYU-Hawaii 3-0 on Friday to capture the 2008 Pacific West Conference Championship.
The victory occurred in Laie, HI, on the campus of BYU-Hawaii.
The Argos now will wait to hear from the NCAA Division II selection committee to see if they are extended an invitation to the national tournament. The NCAA Division II Championship field will be announced on Monday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m. PST.
NDNU entered the week ranked fourth in the West Region and posted a 3-0-0 record during three road contests in Hawai‘i.
Unlike women's soccer that provides for an automatic qualifier, men's soccer does not have an AQ in Division II. The top four teams in each region based upon rankings are extended invitations to the post-season.
The Argonauts are now 14-2-3 both overall and in the West Region. Their PacWest record ends at 9-1-2 (20 points).
