Grand Canyon sweeps opening softball awards
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Grand Canyon University swept the first
two softball awards for 2009 when senior 2B Yasmeen
Watkins (Phoenix, AZ/Sunnyslope - photo) and junior
hurler Jessica Palma (San Antonio, TX/Luther
Burbank) were named the Pacific West
Conference Player and Pitcher of the
Week.
The honor was for games played Feb. 1-8 and was anounced by the PacWest Office Media Office in Creek Queen, AZ, on Feb. 27.
Watkins hit .550 for the Antelopes during the opening week of the season, scoring five runs while driving in 11 others. She also doubled and slammed a home run in her seven starts.
In addition to her batting average, Watkins racked up a .750 slugging percentage and a .577 on-base mark.
Palma led the entire PacWest in victories for the week, going 3-0 with three complete games, 17 strikeouts and a 3.33 earned run average.
PacWest Softball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll
Lindsay Christ (photo) - NDNU (Sr., OF, R/R, 5-6, Orting,
WA/Summer) - hit .450 in five starts for the
Argos...scored five runs...was perfect on stolen base attempts,
going 6 for 6...went 9 for 20 with a double and a triple.
Kara Holtorf - Grand Canyon (Fr., OF, L/R, 5-7, Peoria, AZ/Sunrise Mountain) - hit .467 in seven starts...went 14 for 30 with seven runs scored and two RBI...produced a 467 slugging rate and a .467 on-base percentage...went 3 for 3 in stolen bases.
Shantae Hunter - Dixie State (Jr., 2B, R/R, 5-5, Idaho Falls, ID/Idaho Falls) - batted .500 in three starts for the Red Storm...was 5 for 10 with five runs scored and four RBI...was 2 for 2 in stolen base attempts...recorded a .500 slugging mark and a 500 on-base rate.
Randi Johns - Grand Canyon (Sr., 1B, R/R, 5-7, Waddell, AZ/Millennium) - scored 10 runs and drove in 11 others during seven games for the Antelopes...hit .435 by going 10 for 23...had a double and two home runs...produced a .739 slugging rate and a .500 on-base mark.
Courtney Kessell (photo) - Hawai‘i Pacific (Sr., P, R/R,
5-6, Waimanalo, HI/Kailua) - posted a 2-0 mark to
start the season in two starts...tossed one complete game and 10
innings...allowed no earned runs and just five base hits...struck
out 12...opponents hit just .147...hit .600 with six RBI by going 3
for 5...had a double and a run scored.
Sherise Musquiz - Hawai‘i Pacific (Jr., P, R/R, 6-0, Pico Rivera, CA/El Rancho) - recorded a 2-0 mark to start the year...tossed one complete game and 11 innings...allowed no earned runs and just four base hits...struck out six...opponents hit just 114.
Krystal Plunkett - Hawai‘i Pacific (Sr., SS, R/R, 5-6, Pearl City, HI/Pearl City) - batted 545 in four starts for the Vulcans...was 6 for 11 with four runs, six RBI and two homers...turned in an .818 slugging percentage and an on-base mark of 643...also had two walks and was hit by a pitch.
Aisha Sueda - Hawai‘i Hilo (Fr., IF, R/R, 5-4, Hilo, HI/Hilo) - hit .571 in four games to lead the PacWest for the Week...produced a 1.071 slugging mark and a .571 on-base percentage...was 8 for 14 with three runs scored, a double, two homers and seven RBI.
Casey Sugihara - Hawai‘i Pacific (Jr., IF, L/R, 5-2, Mililani, HI/Mililani) - batted .538 in four starts for the Sea Warriors...went 7 for 13 with five runs scored and five RBI...doubled twice...produced a .692 slugging mark and a .571 on base rate.
Sarah Weisskopf - Hawai‘i Hilo (Jr., P, R/R, 5-6, Kapolei, HI/Punahou) - registered a 2-0 record in three appearances and two starts...tossed a pair of complete games...struck out 10 batters over 18 innings...allowed a .221 batting average and recorded a 0.78 ERA...also hit .500 by going 5 for 10 with two runs scored...had a .500 slugging mark and a .545 on-base rate.
