Hawai‘i Hilo's Desiree Agadar earns latest PacWest Volleyball Player of the Week award 

QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Hawai‘i Hilo sophomore setter Desiree Agader (Kekaha, HI/Waimea) has been named the PacWest Player of the Week for the second time this season.

The award was announced by the Pacific West Conference on Monday, October 8, from its league information office in Queen Creek, AZ. The honor was for matches played from October 1-7.

Agader amassed 198 assists in five road matches during the week, leading the Vulcans to a 4-1 overall record and a 3-1 West Region mark during the stretch. Hawai‘i Hilo also produced a 2-0 PacWest sweep vs. NDNU.

She boasted a career-high 67 assists on Friday night, October 7 at NDNU, then churned out 62 more assists the next night as the Vulcans saddled the Argos with their first two conference losses of the season.

 

Vulcans climb into 1st; BYU-Hawai‘i gears up for showdown with UHH

QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Like a bag full of Scrabble tiles, the volleyball teams of the PacWest found themselves dumped inside a sack before the week started.

At the end of the week, Hawai‘i Hilo had been pulled out first after sweeping NDNU in a pair of critical matches.

In the mean time, BYU-Hawai‘i, Hawai‘i Pacific, Grand Canyon and Dixie State spent the last seven days taking bites out of each other. Chaminade watched the fray develop thanks to a break in their schedule until October 12.

How competitive was this week's action? Of the 10 PacWest matches played, eight went to five games while the other two ended up 3-1 scores.

The Vulcan-Argo collision on Friday and Saturday ended with UHH scratching out a 3-1 victory in the first match and surviving a 3-2 battle in round two.

The Vulcans played five matches during the week, going 4-1 in California with a four-match winning streak.

Rookie Hillary Hurley (Anderson, CA/Enterprise) racked up 43 kills in the two matches against NDNU.

The Argos were led by seniors Marissa Miller (Linden, CA/Linden) and Emily Evans (Oakdale, CA/Oakdale) who had 34 and 33 kills, respectively, vs. UHH.

Grand Canyon picked up two PacWest victories this week, handing Hawai‘i Pacific and BYU-Hawai‘i each a loss. Sophomore Dana Edington (Peoria, AZ/Centennial) had 92 kills and senior Audra Slemmer (Chandler, AZ/Mountain Pointe) rattled off 207 assists as the Antelopes posted a 2-2 mark in four contest.

BYU-Hawai‘i won three out of four PacWest road matches this week, moving into second place behind the Vulcans and setting up a huge showdown on the island of Hilo this weekend. Junior MB Faylynn Merrick (Sauk Rapids, MN/Sauk Rapids Rice) led the Seasiders with a .419 hitting percentage. She had kills 47 and 15 total blocks.

Sophomore OH Cami Johnson (Morgan, UT/Morgan) had 64 kills, 57 digs and 14 blocks last week as she helped the Rebels earn a big league win over HPU.

Junior setter Antje Buskies (Berlin, Germany) scored 86 kills, 12 aces and 77 digs as Hawai‘i Pacific recorded a 2-2 week.
