29-Nov. 4
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Notre Dame de Namur senior outside hitter Marissa Miller (Linden, CA/Linden) has been named the PacWest Player of the Week.
The honor was announced by the league office on Thursday and is for the week of Oct. 29-Nov. 4.November.
In three matches and 10 games last week, Miller scored 46 points to lead the conference. She averaged 4.60 points per game by recording 37 kills, five service aces, a block solo and six block assists.
Miller also averaged 4.40 digs per game after totalling 44 over the three matches. She led the Argos to a 2-1 week that featured a sweep of Grand Canyon.
Possibility of three-way tie for 2nd makes for interesting late-season matches
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - With the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo already locked into a title, the most interesting race in the Pacific West Conference entering the final matches of the season involve BYU-Hawai‘i, Chaminade and NDNU. The possibility of a three-way deadlock for second exists with all three teams sharing 8-6 marks.
The Seasiders have just one match left when they host Chaminade along the North Shore this Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. HT. A victory by the Silverswords could forge a three-way deadlock if NDNU takes care of Dixie State on Friday and Chaminade beats Hawai‘i Pacific on Thursday.
While NDNU may be favored over the Rebels, Dixie State's motivation is to possibly catch HPU for fifth place. The Sea Warriors would have to lose both matches vs. UHH and Chaminade, while Dixie State would need to defeat NDNU on Friday. Both the Argos and Rebels square off again Saturday night in a non-league contest to close out 2007.
Grand Canyon has completed it PacWest schedule and sits at 3-11 in the league. The Antelopes could share sixth place if Dixie State suffers a loss to NDNU, but GCU won't be sitting around waiting for scores on Saturday night. Grand Canyon will close out its regular season with a non-league battle at home vs. Embry-Riddle.
NDNU posted a 2-1 week, including a sweep of Grand Canyon over the weekend. Sophomore MB Caitlin Torres (San Jose, CA/Leigh) hit .320 with 11 total blocks for the Argos in 10 games. She recorded 25 kills.
Rookie setter Pamela Alano (Daly City, CA/Mercy) and senior MB Sarah Perry (Atascadero, CA/Mission College Prep) each churned out eight service aces during the week for NDNU, while Alano registered 64 assists.
In HPU's three-game sweep at the hands of UHH, the Sea Warrior sophomore DS Charley Sampaga (Honolulu, HI/Kalani) recorded 22 digs for a 7.33 per game rate.
The Vulcans were led by rookie OP/OH Hillary Hurley (Anderson, CA/Enterprise) who hit .438 in UHH's victory over HPU. She finished up with 16 kills in 32 attempts with just two errors.
Grand Canyon senior setter Auda Slemmer (Chandler, AZ/Mountain Pointe) posted 62 assists, while junior MB Shea Robinson (Phoenix, AZ/North Canyon) turned in 10 total blocks over two matches last week.
Chaminade freshman OH Samantha Miller (San Bruno, CA/Aragon) and senior MB/OH Evelyn Bluthenthal (Los Angeles, CA/Venice) each collected 15 kills.
BYU-Hawai‘i dropped a 3-2 match vs. Chaminade last week despite senior OH Noelle Filimoeatu (Lindon, UT/Timpanogos) recording 21.5 points on 20 kills, a block solo and a block assist.
