Dixie State wins pair of home games behind Carver
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Just five games dotted the PacWest women's basketball schedule during Thanksgiving Week, but the entire league will be action over the next seven days as the season kicks into its highest gear - non-conference region games.
Aside from playing each other for a league crown, the most important games PacWest teams can schedule are non-league Division II region contests that help decide who gets into the NCAA Division II Playoffs and who is left out in the proverbial March cold.
Although Dixie State is not eligible yet for the D-II post-season, the Rebels are making a strong early-season showing in their first full year in the PacWest. Junior forward Jessica Carver (Layton, UT/Layton) has been absolutely dominating. Her numbers over the weekend earned her the PacWest Player of the Week award.
But she wasn't the only Rebel playing well. Rookie guard Jessica Jones (Sacramento, CA/Natomas) averaged 14 points and 4.00 steals per game last week for Dixie State, while freshman forward Brandi Barrett (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane) shot 50.0% from the field and averaged 9.0 points and 7.5 boards per contest.
BYU-Hawai‘i sophomore guard Agnes Tuilevuka (Suva, Fiji) dropped 11 points and pulled eight rebounds in the Seasiders' lone contest of the week. Freshman guard Richelle Fenenbock (Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City) scored an even dozen in the loss at St. Martin's.
Grand Canyon posted a 1-1 week thanks to
Rosalyn Nelson (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley),
Ashley Hardin (Chandler, AZ/Marcos de
Niza) and Samantha Murphy (Phoenix,
AZ/Xavier Prep).
Nelson averaged 15.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while doling out a league-best nine assists. Murphy averaged 12 points per contest, while Hardin averaged 9.0 points and 6.0 rebounds.
Chaminade and Hawai‘i Hilo cancelled their non-league contest scheduled for last Monday night, but the Vulcans and Silverswords - as well as the Sea Warriors of Hawai‘i Pacific - will play their first games of 2007-08 this week.
