For the second time this year, Nelson earns PacWest weekly
basketball honor
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Grand Canyon University sophomore guard Rosalyn Nelson (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) has been selected the PacWest Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this year.
The honor was announced on Monday, Dec. 3, by the PacWest Conference Information Office in Queen Creek, AZ, and covered games from Nov. 26 - Dec. 2.
Nelson led the Antelopes to a 1-1 week by averaging 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
She topped the PacWest in scoring, steals (11), steals per game (5.50) and assists per game (4.50) during the seven-day stretch.
Despite just one win during the week, PacWest women's basketball showing some solid individual performances
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - It was a tough week for PacWest women's basketball as the league picked up just one victory in 10 non-conference match-ups. Grand Canyon University was the lone winner as the Lopes shredded Western New Mexico 64-48 on Nov. 27.
GCU was led by sophomore guard Rosalyn Nelson (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) and her outstanding all-around game as the second-year player claimed her second PacWest Player of the Week award for 2007-08. Junior forward Jacque Stevens (Flagstaff, AZ/Flagstaff), freshman guard Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier Prep) and junior forward Ashley Hardin (Chandler, AZ/Marcos de Niza) all averaged in twin-figures as well, giving Grand Canyon four of the top five scorers for the week.
Stevens averaged 16.0 points over her two games, while Murphy shot 50.0% from the field to post a 13.5 points per outing rate that fit nicely with her 6.5 boards per game average. Hardin knocked down 10.5 points per game for GCU.
While Dixie State and BYU-Hawai‘i had the week off, Chaminade, Hawai‘i Hilo and Hawai‘i Pacific all jump-started their seasons. UHH suffered a pair of losses in Colorado, but sophomore forward Samantha Nordstrom (Redmond, OR/Redmond) averaged 10.0 points per game by hitting five field goals and going 10 for 12 from the line.
HPU was led by junior forward Nikki Jordan (Marysville, WA/Marysville Pilchuck) and junior guard Emily Kreutter (Santa Clara, CA/Archbishop Mitty) as the Sea Warriors made their 2007 debut. Jordan averaged 14.7 points per contest over three games as Kreutter pulled down 6.0 rebounds per contest over the same stretch.
Chaminade opened up its season with a pair of tough losses in Alaska despite solid performances from red-shirt freshman Felicia Alves (Ponce, PR/Hilo, HI) and senior guard Marian Murphy (Benicia, CA/St. Patrick-St. Vincent). Each player averaged 8.0 points per game over two contests, while Alves ranked second in the PacWest for the week in rebounds per game with a 7.0 mark.
NDNU lost three tough games in the state of Washington vs. St. Martin's, Seattle and Central Washington, but the setbacks could not slow down sophomore Jennifer Dreessen's (Danville, CA/San Ramon Valley) dominance of the glass. She led the PacWest for the week in rebounding by averaging 7.7 per game. Junior point guard Sandy Perry (Palmdale, CA/Palmdale) doled out 4.00 assists per contest over the same three-game stretch. She ranked second in the conference for the week.
