Phommabout is fair play as Dixie State junior guard claims PacWest

QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Dixie State junior guard Denny Phommabout (West Valley City, UT/Hillcrest) has been selected the PacWest Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
The honor is for games played from Dec. 3-9.
Phommabout led the Rebels to a 1-2 week by averaging 16.0 points per game. She hit 54.8% of her field goal attempts by going 17 for 31 from the field. She also was 4 for 8 from beyond the arc (50%) and made 10 of 11 free throw attempts (90.9%).
Phommabout was solid on defense as well, recording eight steals for a 2.67 per game average.
Dixie State, Grand Canyon each earn non-league victory
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - The PacWest completed its fourth week of women's basketball with six of the league's seven teams in action throughout the region. Only Hawai‘i Pacific was on the sidelines during the last seven days.
Although both Hawai‘i Hilo and Notre Dame de Namur traveled to Humboldt State University over the weekend for the Lumberjack Classic, the Vulcans and Argonauts met only as spectators and each were handed a pair of tough losses. Fort Hays State out of Kansas and host Humboldt State each swiped victories from the two PacWest programs who are both still looking for their first victories of 2007-08.
NDNU was led by junior forward Britni Rathke (Snohomish, WA/Snohomish) who averaged 6.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game over the two contests in Northern California. UHH junior guard Ashley Kualii (Hilo, HI/Waiakei) was named to the All-Tournament Team thanks to her 12.0 points per game average. She shot 50% from the field (10 for 20) and doled out 3.5 assists per game during the weekend.
Grand Canyon had just one game on the week and the Antelopes galloped to an easy 79-51 stomping of Cal State Monterey Bay. Sophomore guard Rosalyn Nelson (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) was her usual self, posting 24 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while freshman guard Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier Prep) dropped in 22 points by shooting 66.7% from the field (8 for 12). She hit 4 of 6 three-pointers (66.7%) to bolster her point total.
Dixie State picked up a victory over Concordia (CA) in a 1-2 week that also saw the Rebels take on Division I-bound South Dakota. In addition to junior guard Denny Phommabout's (West Valley City, UT/Hillcrest) antics that earned her PacWest Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors, the Rebels also received 11.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest from junior forward Jessica Carver (Layton, UT/Layton). Freshman guard Jessica Rodgers (Covington, WA/Kentwood), meanwhile, drained 4 of 6 three-pointers during the week.
In the tough battle vs. South Dakota, Phommabout hit 7-of-12
shots from the field a
nd led the Rebels with 22 points, while Carver chipped in with 17
points, six rebounds and three assists.
BYU-Hawai‘i junior guard Hoku Holdcraft (Orem, UT/Mountain View) scored 10 points in a 73-48 home loss vs. Alaska Anchorage. It was the lone contest of the week for the Seasiders.
Chaminade also squared off vs. Alaska Anchorage at home, falling 92-43 against the tough regional foe. Senior guard/forward Simrin Cummins (Eugene, OR/Eugene - photo) scored 11 points and senior guard Marian Murphy (Benicia, CA/St. Patrick-St. Vincent) chipped in nine in the lone contest of the week for the Silverswords.
