Chaminade sophomore earns PacWest Player of the Week
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Chaminade sophomore point guard Samantha Saito (Aiea, HI/Sacred Hearts Academy) has been chosen the PacWest Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
The honor is for games contested from Dec. 24-30.
Saito led the Silverswords with a 15-point effort vs. Nebraska-Omaha in her team's lone game of the week by connecting on 5 of 9 field goal attempts (55.6%). She was also 4 for 4 from the foul line.
Race for the PacWest title heats up this week as conference season begins
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - The race for the PacWest women's basketball title begins this week when newcomer Dixie State and the rest of the conference attempt to unseat reigning champion Grand Canyon. Here is this week's roundup:
BYU-Hawaii: In a pair of loses vs. Seattle and the Colorado School of Mines, freshman guard Richelle Fenenbock (Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City) averaged 16.5 points per game.
Chaminade: Over the past two weeks, senior guard Marian Murphy (Benicia, CA/St. Patrick-St. Vincent) has averaged 11.0 points per game...sophomore point guard Samantha Saito (Aiea, HI/Sacred Hearts Academy) has contributed 8.5 points per game during that same stretch...she has hit 7 of 8 (87.5%) free throw attempts.
Dixie State: Junior forward Jessica Carver
(Layton, UT/Layton - photo) has led the PacWest in
rebounding over the last two weeks, posting 10.5 per game...she has
21 over two games, including 16 on the defensive glass...freshman
forward Brandi Barrett (Hurricane,
UT/Hurricane) is second during that same stretch with
a 7.5 per game rate.
Grand Canyon: Antelope rookie guard Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier Prep) scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting in a loss vs. Holy Family out of Philadelphia...Grand Canyon also picked up seven boards in the setback from sophomore forward Stacy Haddow (Chino Valley, AZ/Chino Valley).
Hawai‘i Hilo: The Vulcans saw junior guard Ashley Kualii (Hilo, HI/Waiakea) average 12 points and 7.5 assists per game in two tough losses for UHH...her 15 assists tied for the most among PacWest players during the two-week stretch from Dec. 17-30...junior guard Nesha Kimitete (Kailua-Kona, HI/Konawaena) shot 66.7% from the field over two games by going 8 for 12.Hawai‘i Pacific: Senior guard Ashley Jenkins (Ft. Washington, MD/Stephenson) continued her torrid season by putting up spectacular numbers over five games covering the last two weeks...she averaged 20.6 points per game by connecting on 18 of 22 free throws (81.8%)...she averaged 5.8 rebounds per game during the stretch.
