Nelson claims third PacWest honor of the season
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Grand Canyon sophomore guard Rosalyn Nelson (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) has been chosen the PacWest Player of the Week for the third time this season.
The honor is for games contested from Dec. 31-Jan. 6.
Nelson led the Antelopes to a 3-0 start to the PacWest Conference season as Grand Canyon beat Hawai‘i Pacific twice and BYU-Hawaii on Saturday night.
The second-year player averaged 21.0 points per game to rank first among all PacWest players for the week. She also recorded a dozen steals (4.00 spg.), pulled down 20 rebounds (6.7 rpg.), and doled out 10 assists (3.33 apg.).
Grand Canyon marches to 3-0 start; Hawai‘i Hilo earns league victory
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - Grand Canyon University jumped out to a 3-0 start to the 2007-08 PacWest women's basketball season as the Antelopes began defense of their 2006-07 crown. In addition, BYU-Hawaii, NDNU and Hawai‘i Hilo all claimed their first victories of the year during the week. Here is this week's PacWest roundup:
BYU-Hawaii: The Seasiders beat NDNU on Tuesday night 67-65 for their first victory of the season before getting thumped by the Argos the next night 87-49...BYU-Hawaii also dropped a tough decision at Grand Canyon...freshman guard Richelle Fenenbock (Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City) averaged 12.7 ppg. during the week.
Chaminade: The Silverswords dropped all three games during the week, including a pair of PacWest contests vs. Dixie State...sophomore point guard Samantha Saito (Aiea, HI/Sacred Hearts Academy) averaged 13.7 ppg. during the stretch.
Dixie State: The Rebels made their PacWest debut at Hawai‘i Hilo on Jan. 2, falling to the Vulcans 80-73...Dixie State exacted some revenge by taking two from Chaminade on Friday and Saturday...junior forward Jessica Carver (Layton, UT/Layton) averaged 17.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game during her stay in Hawai‘i...she shot 54.5% from the field...junior guard Courtney Boyd (Keokuk, IA/Keokuk) topped the league in assists for the week with 20 (6.67 apg.).
Grand Canyon: Antelope rookie guard Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier Prep) powered in 19.7 points per game during the week...she hit 18 of 33 field goal attempts (54.5%), including draining 6 of 11 three-pointers along the way...junior forward Jacque Stevens (Flagstaff, AZ/Flagstaff) pulled down 6.7 boards and doled out 4.0 assists per contest...she also was a perfect 8 for 8 from the foul line.
Hawai‘i Hilo: The Vulcans picked up their first
victory of the season on Jan. 2 - a seven-point triumph over Dixie
State...sophomore forward Samantha Nordstrom (Redmond,
OR/Redmond - photo) dropped in 18 points, while
junior Sheila Azevedo (Hilo, HI/Waiakea)
scored 10 points and collected 11 rebounds...sophomore guard
Jamie Mattos (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Keaau)
contributed 15 points in the victory.
Hawai‘i Pacific: The Sea Warriors dropped a pair of contests at Grand Canyon during the week...senior guard Ashley Jenkins (Ft. Washington, MD/Stephenson) averaged 19.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in the two setbacks...junior guard Karras Blate (Yosemite, CA/Yosemite) pitched in 12.5 per outing.
NDNU: The Argos split their two PacWest games vs. BYU-Hawaii this week...senior guard Corazon Riley (Antioch, CA/Antioch) topped NDNU in scoring with a 17.0 ppg. average...junior guard Ashley Wilson (San Diego, CA/Cal Lutheran) tossed in 13.0 per contest...she hit 6 of 10 three-point attempts (60.0%) - best among PacWest players for the week.
