Dixie St. upends Vulcans, creates logjam near top
QUEEN CREEK, AZ - The schedule makers could not have planned it any better during the last week of the PacWest season. That's when all three Mainland schools visit Hawai‘i for what will amount to a winner-take-all final seven days. And capping the week will be a rematch of Hawai‘i Hilo and Dixie State on Saturday, November 3, that could decide the PacWest crown.
BYU-Hawai‘i and Hawai‘i Hilo currently share first place at the midpoint of the PacWest season with 15 points on identical 5-1-0 records.
However, Dixie State's overtime triumph on Friday pulled the Rebels within a tie of first place. Dixie State is now 4-1-1 on the year with just a tie vs. Grand Canyon keeping the Rebels from sharing the first-place pie.
Yet long before UHH and Dixie State square off again, BYU-Hawai‘i will have some input on who will finish first. The Seasiders, along with Chaminade, were idle this week and had a chance to watch the rest of the league beat each other up.
Dixie State was led by Maria Wilkes' (Cedar Hills, UT/Long Peak) and her record-setting week. She finished with nine points on four goals - all vs. HPU on October 10 - then set up freshman Wendy Stratford (Layton, UT/Layton) with the game-winning goal in overtime vs. UHH. Sophomore middie Robyn Wall (Bountiful, UT/Bountiful) scored a goal in each game for the Rebels.
The Vulcans were paced by freshman forward Jani Carmona (Lompoc, CA/Lompoc - PHOTO) and sophomore forward Megan Pachecano (Pahoa, HI) who posted four points each. Carmona scored twice, while Pachecano had a goal with two assists.
One team the rest of the PacWest can not overlook is NDNU, the reigning league champion. The Argos have just four wins this season, but three have come at the expense of PacWest teams.
Last week Catherine Ponce (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces) scored twice, while Amy Armijo (Castro Valley, CA/Castro Valley) had a game-winning goal and an assist.
Grand Canyon's Vanessa Young (San Diego, CA/El Serena) produced four points on two goals last week, while junior forward Lindsey Countryman (Farmington, NM/Farmington) had a goal and an assist, including the game-winner vs. HPU.
Hawai‘i Pacific dropped all three conference games on the Mainland while scoring just one goal. E. Sarrett-Pilgrim tallied her first career score for HPU, while sophomore Jamie Hirai (Captain Cook, HI/Konawaena) took over the team lead in assists by adding her third.
