BYU-Hawaii drops heartbreaker in opening round of NCAAs
BYU-Hawaii falls 1-0 in double-overtime
Seattle, WA - The Brigham Young University Hawaii
women's soccer team battled UC San Diego into double overtime
tonight before falling just short at the NCAA II West Regional
Tournament, losing 1-0 on a goal in the 104th minute of play.
The underdog Seasiders, seeded sixth
in the tournament, gave the third-seeded Tritons all they could
handle as each team had several scoring opportunities throughout
the game.
Shelby Wong scored her first goal of the season on a kick from
seven yards out after a through ball from Sarah McTigue to end the
long match and send UC San Diego on to a match with host Seattle
Pacific on Saturday.
BYU-Hawaii started the match very slowly as UC San Diego got off
the first seven shots of the match. However, the Seasiders
warmed up despite the cold Seattle weather and finished the match
with 14 shots compared to 18 for the Tritons.
In the first overtime the Seasiders
put pressure on UC San Diego with five shots on goal but couldn't
get one to find the net. BYU-Hawaii goalie Becky Ploeger was
outstanding in goal for the Seasiders, coming up with six saves
today and coming out of the goal on several occasions to beat the
Tritons to the ball.
With the loss, the Seasiders close out the season with 14-5
overall.
