BYU-Hawaii claims PacWest title, berth in NCAA's

LAIE, HI - Sarah Welty scored what would prove to be the goal that landed the BYU-Hawaii women's soccer team the 2008 Pacific West Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Playoffs on Friday afternoon as the Seasiders blanked Notre Dame de Namur 2-0 in Laie, HI.

Welty tallied the game-winner at 9:57 off a feed from Natasha Aiono, giving BYU-Hawaii a 1-0 jumpstart, while Britt Edman redirected a feed from Margaret Sekona for an insurance goal with just over two minutes left in regulation.

The victory lifted the Seasiders to a 10-2 mark in the PacWest as they finished with 20 points on the season. BYU-Hawaii has amassed a 14-4 overall record.

The first-place finish secures a berth in the NCAA Division II post-season for the Seasiders as BYU-Hawaii claimed the league's inaugural automatic qualifier. The Division II Tournament will be announced after this weekend's games around the country.

BYU-Hawaii also completed a PacWest sweep of women's championships this fall. The Seasiders won the PacWest Cross Country Championship and also have secured the automatic qualifier for claiming the PacWest volleyball title.
