BYU-Hawaii moves into semifinals

HOUSTON, TX - The top-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women's tennis team defeated 15th-ranked West Florida today, 5-1, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA II National Championship Tournament.

The Seasiders swept all three doubles matches and then earned wins at number two and number five singles to roll to the win and improve to 28-0 for the season. BYU-Hawaii has now won 88 consecutive dual matches during its latest winning streak.

In the doubles matches the Seasiders' duo of Jenny Chin and Ayako Ikeda took an 8-1 win at number three doubles while the eighth-ranked tandem of Ramona Husaru and Becky Lu were winning 8-3 at the second slot.

Top-ranked Elwen Li and Maggie Deng avenged their only loss of the season as they prevailed at number one doubles by a score of 8-6 over the nation's second-ranked duet.

In singles play, Chin powered her way to a 6-1, 6-1 win at the fifth position but Li was upset at number one singles by sixth-ranked Suzanna Cavalcante by a 6-2, 6-0 score. However, Deng finished off the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at number two singles.

BYU-Hawaii will face its toughest task of the season tomorrow when they play second-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State in Houston at 9:00 am.

Both teams are undefeated going into tomorrow's national semifinal and the winner will be heavily favored to win the national title on Saturday.
