Chaminade defeats Grand Canyon 5-3, moves on to face BYU-Hawaii
ST. GEORGE, UT - Chaminade University captured two of three doubles matches and won three of the five singles competitions to beat Grand Canyon University 5-3 on Thursday in the first round of the 2008 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championship.
Chaminade will face top seed BYU-Hawaii at 9 a.m. MDT on Friday in
one of two semifinal matches scheduled. Grand Canyon will play for
fifth place on Saturday vs. the winner of Friday's Dixie
State-Notre Dame de Namur contest.
The PacWest Championships are being held at the Green Valley Resort & Spa in St. George, UT.
Chaminade's Audra Takara, Joelle Tanaka and Steffany Godinet each won two matches, while Grand Canyon's Amanda Jackson won both a doubles and a singles match.
GCU's Sheila Johnson, the oldest athlete in the NCAA at the age of 60, captured her fifth singles contest 6-3, 6-0.
