BYU-Hawaii captures PacWest title, Li claims MVP honor; Chaminade's Takara wins Sportsmanship Award
ST. GEORGE, UT - BYU-Hawaii captured two of three doubles matches and swept through three singles contests en route to a 5-1 victory on Saturday and the 2008 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championship.
Hewenfei (Elwen) Li was named the tournament's most valuable player
after sweeping first singles 6-0, 6-0 and teaming up with Kun
(Maggie) Deng for an 8-1 victory at first doubles.
Chengjie (Becky) Lu earned two victories as well for the Seasiders after she claimed fourth singles 6-4, 6-0 and partnered with Ramona Husaru for an 8-4 second doubles triumph.
Seulki (Jenny) Chin rounded out the victories for BYU-Hawaii with a 6-4, 6-1 win at fifth singles.
The Sea Warriors lone win came at third doubles thanks to Tinka Mihova and Elena Hudzikova who earned an 8-3 victory.
The PacWest Championships are being held at the Green Valley Resort & Spa in St. George, UT. Although collegiate dual-competitions feature nine matches, the entire team match ends when one team earns its fifth victory.
Chaminade's Audra Takara was selected as the winner of the PacWest Women's Tennis Sportsmanship Award for her unselfish play and professional conduct on the court.
