Hawai‘i Pacific women's tennis beats Northwood (MI) in Round of 16

HOUSTON, TX - The Hawai‘i Pacific University women's tennis team defeated Northwood University (MI) today in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

The Lady Sea Warriors over came a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to win 5-3.

The match began inauspiciously for HPU, as Ingrid Cseh and Lauren Shin lost their match 8-4.  Senior Elena Hudzikova and partner Tinka Mihova evened matters at 1-1 with an 8-4 win at third doubles.

The doubles tandem improved to 12-1 on the season.  Nina Mihova and Anastasiya Ageychik fought their way back from a 6-3 deficit to tie the match at 6-6.  However, they were unable to pull out the win, losing 8-6. 

Trailing 2-1, HPU opened singles play with a victory at number four. Hudzikova won 6-1, 6-3 to tie the match 2-2.  She was followed by a loss in first singles by Cseh, who was defeated by #28 Darina Burkova, 6-0, 6-1.

The Lady Sea Warriors then turned out three consecutive wins with Ageychik easily winning 6-1, 6-0 at third singles, and Tinka Mihova topping her opponent at number five, 6-1, 6-3.  The third and final victory came from Shin at sixth singles.  After dropping the first set 6-1, Shin fought to easily win the second and third sets 6-2, 6-0. 

With the win the Lady Sea Warriors advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal round of the National Championships where they meet the winner of Valdosta State and Slippery Rock.
